unfortunately, electoral reality suggests 30% are usually voting d, 30% are usually voting r, and 40% are those centrists.
unless there is some amazing amount of successful r suppression applied, both sides have to tack to the middle to get to 50%...and surprise, surprise, it's happening again.
mccain, on the other hand, actually seems to be tacking right, which is highly abnormal--and will either be seen later as genius or...john mccain.
I am really puzzled that people see this as some sort of shift. He was easily the most conservative of the Dems, used conservative rhetoric throughout the process and defended converative practices and programs on numerous occassions. It's true that he has reneged on a few things (e.g. campaign financing) but he's generally been pretty consistent. People see what they want to see, I guess.
